Leghorn and American Leghorn are often confused because they are different breeding lines. While the American Leghorn is a chicken breed that was bred from Italian country chicken breeds as early as the 19th century and recognized by the Association of German Poultry Breeders, the Leghorn is a layer hybrid. These, in turn, are neither suitable for the self-sufficient farm nor for breeding.
